What is "Bonding”?

Main Bonding or Main Equipotential Bonding of Metal Surfaces to give it, its full title.

Main equipotential conding conductors are required to connect the following metallic parts to the main earthing terminal, where they are extraneous-conductive-parts:

  1. Metal water service pipes
  2. Metal gas installation pipes
  3. Other metal service pipes (including oil and gas supply pipes) and ducting
  4. Metal central heating and air conditioning system
  5. Exposed metallic structural parts of the building
  6. Lighting protection ststems

Supplementary Bonding or Supplementary Equipotential Bonding in locations of increased shock risk

In a bathroom or shower room, local supplementary equipotential bonding is required to be provided connecting together the terminal of protective conductors of each circuit supplying Class I and Class II equipment in zones 1, 2 or 3 and extraneous-conductive-parts in these zones including the following:

  1. Metal pipes supplying services and metallic waste pipes (e.g. water, gas)
  2. Metal central heating pipes and air conditioning systems
  3. Accesible metal structural parts of the building (metal door architraves, metal handrails, window frames and similar parts not considered to be extraneous-conductive-parts of the building)
  4. Metal baths and metal shower basins
